Analytics

I talk a lot about privacy on this site. Why? I care about it personally.

I try to respect others' privacy as if it were my own at all times.

Analytics and privacy often don't go together, so I feel obligated to talk about it here. Here is exactly what I use to measure traffic and what it can see.

What I use

Cloudflare Web Analytics. These sites already run on Cloudflare, and this is their cookieless option. I use it to see roughly how many people visit, which pages get read, and how fast pages load, in case I made any silly mistakes. That is all I want it for.

What it collects

  • Which pages get viewed (the path only, query strings are not logged)
  • Where a visit came from, when the browser sends a referrer
  • Country
  • Device type, browser, and operating system
  • Page load timing

Cloudflare says it does not use cookies or local storage for these metrics, does not fingerprint visitors, and does not track individual people across sites. I only see totals and breakdowns, never a person.

One honest limit: Cloudflare delivers these pages, so it handles every request on its network whether or not the analytics script runs, like any site behind Cloudflare. Their privacy policy covers that part.

How to opt out or block it

The script loads from static.cloudflareinsights.com. Most content blockers already stop it. If yours does not, add that domain to its block list (uBlock Origin, Brave Shields, or DNS filters like NextDNS and Pi-hole all work). The site behaves the same either way. I have not verified that it honors Do Not Track, so I would not rely on that.
